NIPMUCS Nipmuc , Nipmuck or Nipnet all translate to, 'People of the Fresh Water". We consist of many small clans or bands of families. We are people of agriculture, and the best of farmers in early times. However, this was not our only talent. Nipmucs are also excellent fishermen as well as very accomplished in pottery, basket masking, Crafts and Traditional Music . Our Traditional Homeland is Central Massachussetts to the CT. River, all the way to just east of Framingham Ma. -North East CT. North Rhode Island and Southern N.H. 1675 was the Start of the King Phillips War , this was a war of a Confederation Of Eastern Tribes to save the Culture, Land and way of life from the English. Most of the War took place across Nipmuc Land having a devastaing effect on our people as well as our way of life.We Remember and give honor to some of our Great Leaders such as Sagamore Sam, MattuWamp and Matoonas who fought proudly to protect this Land Their Ultimate Dream was not to fight, but to protect something that is so beautiful, so Beautiful that it could not be taken by force lest the beauty disappear . But to be shared by all, which was always our way and the way it was shared with us by Manitoo But still the deleterious effects remain, our homeland in Massachussetts alone was over 2 thousand square miles! Today we have about 15 acres , so we continue to strive for the return of our Sacred land , for the Heart of our Community is our Connection to this Land We Have been across this Land for thousands of years and we are still here.
